Kick-Ass


This is not a kids’ movie. You think that would be obvious considering that the word ass is in the title, and it’s not referring to a playful donkey, but apparently not. Also, if you’re one of those numerous people I’ve heard say they thought this is a kiddy flick, check the rating foolio! It’s rated R. Not R as in a Roaring good time for the whole family, or R as in Run, don’t walk with your toddlers to this film, but R as in you’re Risking getting kicked out of the theater if you are under 17. So now that we have that cleared up, go see this movie. Honestly, I wouldn’t even bother reading the rest of this blog. But, since I’ve already seen it, I can take the time to write it.

This movie is relevant. Not in the way that superheroes are now strutting around the streets of your city, but in that the humor and characters are what’s funny now. This is a movie in the tradition of Superbad. This is Superbad 2.0. Superbad 2.0 with superheroes. I know! It sounds awesome! Why are you not at the theater already? Oh, right, because I’m so charming and you can’t leave without knowing what other brilliant and witty things I’m going to say. Keeping the dream alive baby.

Of course, the whole socially awkward teenage boy bit has sort of been done to death, but at least the dorks/coolest people you will ever see in this movie are really entertaining to watch. The main character is completely endearing and you can’t help being entirely drawn in by his story. Let me just say it’s not a normal story, and that’s part of what’s great. Another part is that he frickin’ dresses up like a superhero! The combination of pure reality and comic book style melodrama makes this film a joy to watch. Anytime you begin to get swept into the fantasy of the movie, you’re hit with the authenticity of real life problems. The little girl superhero (the one who may have made you believe that this was a kids’ movie) is the most violent character in the film. At first this is weird. But, then, it’s amazing. I mean she kills a lot of people. Like there is blood everywhere. This is definitely a violent movie, but it honestly didn't really bother me. Normally, you might say that that reflects poorly on me, but everyone in the theater was cracking up, so if you feel like being critical, blame society. Did I mention Nicolas Cage is in this movie too? Neat, but not a big deal. Basically, it's fun to watch. Which you should know already because you should already be in the theater!

The Last Song


I think I just need to get this out of the way because I fear that otherwise it will seep into the rest of the review. This shouldn’t have affected my viewing of the movie, but I have to say it did. Even when Miley Cyrus is not making any particular face, her cheeks and mouth still do this strange drooping thing, like she’s pouting, all the time. It really bothered me. It made her already moody character seem even more disgruntled. Now I will move on to evaluate the movie and her acting without thinking of that.

Liam Hemsworth is a good-looking young fellow, and I admit to having seen movies purely because they have other similarly attractive fellows in them. However, he was not the reason I saw this film. But, by the end, I felt I needed to say I’d seen it for him as a defense. I was unimpressed with the writing and the majority of the acting in this film. Characters like the troubled red-headed girl seemed unneeded. While a few extra scenes before the two teens declare their love for each other would have been nice. It’s true that the story is rather tragic, but is that supposed to be enough? Liam Hemsworth and Greg Kinnear both did fine jobs. But, the performance I was most moved and impressed by was the young boy, Bobby Coleman. I won’t ruin it for you, but there’s a scene near the end that is heartbreaking because of his excellent acting. Watching someone like Cyrus is always hard to do because as an actress and star she comes with so much baggage. I tried to let all that go, but I have to say, I couldn’t help feeling that her fame got her the role someone else could have performed better. She played a teenager, angry and grumpy and ultimately not such a bad person, but nothing Cyrus did left me feeling connected to her character. The dialogue she said often seemed random and cliché, a hard effect to accomplish, but it actually made me think that perhaps she was improvising (also, I saw an interview where she said she never learned her lines, so that may have affected my opinion as well). If not, than it truly was the writers’ fault because this stuff was akin to the dialogue catastrophe of Star War III. I could see how this could make a good novel, as I’ve heard it is, but too much was missing from the film. Partly because of the time issues that don’t allow a director to include all of a book I’m sure, but also because the commitment didn’t seem to be there. I’d skip it.

Remember Me


I’ll admit that my curiosity about this film mostly stemmed from my love of Lost and Emilie de Ravin. I was also probably tempted to see if Robert Pattison could play a character that wasn’t part of a beloved fantasy series. I may be the only person, but I was not let down by either actors. Although the first scene seemed a little cliché, (and frightening since I live in New York) I found most of the movie to be charming and enjoyable. Certainly the plot of an angsty college student has been done before, but at the least, this was an interesting study of family dynamics and how they truly affect the people we become.

The love story was not an epic one by any standards, but I think I prefer it that way. It seems more natural to have your college boyfriend/girlfriend just be one part of the mess that is your life. Stories that are only about love ignore the many other aspects of everyone’s lives that can drive them crazy just as much as a new crush can. Pierce Brosnan did not seem nearly as out of place as I assumed he would, and in fact, gave a rather multi-dimensional and moving performance. Equally surprising and delightful was the young Ruby Jerins, who played a child stuck in the middle of family tragedy with grace and humor. Although, Pattinson’s character may have been written as an obvious uncontrollable and lost twenty-something, he was able to draw me into the story and remind me that such a boy doesn’t have to be a cliché. I was a little unsure how to feel about da Ravin’s family situation in the movie at points, and her character didn’t have the depth that Pattinson’s did, but she still put in a good performance as a quirky and intelligent young woman.

As to the ending, I did not know what it was going in. I hate having movies, books, anecdotes, anything ruined for me by knowing the ending. If you don’t know the ending, keep it that way. I found it startling, and I was incredibly affected by it. I hope this doesn’t give it away, but it really struck me that there are about 5,000 other stories that could end that way. We saw only one story.

Greenzone


I found this movie disturbing. Not in the “scary movie that really creeped me out” way, but in the “this happened, and the U.S. did it” way. The story may be fiction, but the circumstances are not. I found myself completely disgusted with the bombings and destruction shown in this film. The jarring scene in the prison where Iraqis were kept and tortured was almost too terrible to watch. And the constant reminder that there were no weapons of mass destruction, and that there was no legal reason for the U.S. to intervene and suddenly decide which people they should “punish” reinforced all the negative feelings about the U.S.’s choice. No matter which political party you are a part of here, I don’t think you can watch this movie without seriously questioning not only our government’s actions, but also our lack of response to these actions. The public was largely aware of what was going on in Iraq, perhaps not to the full extent, but the rest we could have pretty easily surmised. I think that this effect was the biggest accomplishment of the movie. Certainly the plot was entertaining to watch and the acting was quality, but the gruesome reality of what the situation in Iraq was and is stays with you after you leave the theater.

Although the intent of making the movie look more like a documentary with the handheld camera work was good, the actual effect was overwhelming. Often it actually hurt my eyes to look at the screen. Even though this technique was irritating, it accomplished its overall goal of simulating reality. It gives the feeling that you are running behind the soldiers on their missions and puts you in their shoes. Matt Damon played an excellent good guy, but the movie’s ability to leave you questioning what is good and bad added some dimension to the character. I think I respected Damon more for being a part of a movie with such an intense message than for his acting necessarily. If you go, expect more than the average Damon action flick.

The Runaways


I am one of the lucky few that got to see any early screening of this biopic about Joan Jett’s first band, The Runaways. I was also extremely honored to have Joan Jett actually attend the screening and speak afterwards. Now, I don’t want to make this about my personal experience, but let me just say, she’s pretty awesome. Just cool, in the original meaning of the word. Now on to the movie.

First off, don’t skip this one just because you may have hated Kristen Stewart in The Twilight Saga. Cut her some slack, Bella Swan is written as a pretty annoying character, how’s she supposed to play it? Anyway, her portrayal is appropriately nothing like the character she plays in the vampire flicks. You may have heard the same rumors as me, that Joan Jett made Stewart cry on set, but quite frankly, I don’t care. Stewart had a great performance. After seeing Stewart in the movie and then being able to see the woman she was playing standing in front of me in real life, I was impressed. Jett also had nothing but good things to say about Stewart and her performance. And even if all this doesn’t quite convince you, let me tell you, this movie is more about Dakota Fanning’s character, Cherie Currie, than Jett. And Ms. Fanning is all grown up. I’m sure she’ll be sick of hearing that by the end of publicity for this movie, but there’s no way of avoiding the subject. Fanning is edgy. I know, who would have guessed that that little charmer from Uptown Girls would grow up and put on a corset and lingerie and perform rock ‘n roll; not to mention portray a hard into drugs and extremely sexually free young woman. Not me, but she pulled it out. She committed to the role, and I believed it. Both also did excellent jobs actually performing the music themselves. That’s all Fanning when you see her singing.

It’s also hard for me to resist a movie with music, especially such great music. And, the fact that the women producing this music were starting a revolution for women in the industry only left me cheering for them more. There was definitely a sense of authenticity to the time, and all the costumes were believable and very stylish (some even appearing to be exact replicas from the actual band). There were a few too many hazy, drug-induced scenes for me, but it did give you a kind of rush (most certainly intended) that can somewhat put you in the minds of the girls in the band. Because of it's genre it also tends to focus a lot more on the "wild" lives of the girls than the music, something that you can accept as part of a rock 'n roll movie or hate. But, if you’d like to see a piece of rock ‘n roll history and the making of a band (and some great actors), I wouldn’t miss it when it comes to theaters.

Percy Jackson and the Olympians: The Lightening Thief


Yes, the title is too long. I lose interest just while listening to it in the trailer; one of the reasons the marketing team appeared to have some trouble with this film. Another big reason you may not know about it is because it came out the same day as Valentine’s Day, which was destined to be the box office favorite. A lot of people may have forgotten about it after opening weekend when any marketing that was taking place seemed to have stopped. But, as for me, I’m glad I choose this film, despite my annoyance with the title.

It’s fun to watch, and when it comes down to it, if a movie achieves that, you can’t ask for a ton more. The characters were extremely enjoyable to watch, and the surprisingly star-studded cast, although adding to the cheesiness, was certainly entertaining. It almost seemed like this was supposed to be a blockbuster, what with the big Hollywood actors, first class director, and epic plot, but somehow it got lost along the way to theaters. I recommend going out and finding it. The younger actors all did great jobs, especially Logan Lerman, who is sure to make teenage girls swoon with his boyish grin and self-confidence befitting a god. The female lead, Alexandra Daddario, was also a pleasant surprise. It’s become ever so rare to have a teenage girl play a character that isn’t a boy-obsessed, princess in distress, but that’s exactly what Alexandra does (You go girl!)

The plot is fast-paced and delightful in it’s recreation and integration of ancient Greek stories into the twentieth century. The setting changes rapidly and the heroes are constantly bombarded with new, if not slightly ridiculous, obstacles. It’s true that some of the circumstances and set/costumes designs are a bit cliché, but it feels okay to laugh at this, like it was planned to add to the comedy of the movie (which is already substantial from the fairly clever script). So, if you’re looking for a laugh and a bit of fantasy, hit it up.

Shutter Island


Let me preface this review with some important information about myself. I don’t do well with scary movies. I don’t like things popping out at me. I don’t like creepy people. This is a person who had Bilbo Baggins' psycho face from the scene near the end The Fellowship of the Ring branded onto my eyeballs for weeks after seeing it. I think you get my point. Now, I’m not saying this is a scary movie, but rather that it does contain some elements that are scary-movie-like that are not my favorite. These elements made the movie somewhat difficult for me to watch, but I’ll do my best to try and leave out my terrified bias.

Visually and conceptually this movie is very well done. The time period and place are very believable, and the flashbacks and dreams are dynamic in color and plot. Although many of the visuals are disturbing, they do not feel out of place and are executed with a style and consistency with the period. They shock the audience’s mind, and leave us searching for answers just as much as DiCaprio’s character is. As for Leonardo DiCaprio, he does a stand out job at freaking out. Obviously, that’s not all he does, but I will say it takes up a large chunk of his time. It appears the he and the audience are often unsure what exactly is going on. This uncertainty keeps you completely engaged in the story-line. I won’t give away the big finale… but I found it a nice twist, if not exactly the ending I wanted. Once out of the theater I actually found the ending comforting, allowing me to remind myself that the more frightening sequences had a purpose.

On a somewhat odd side note, I found the music rather odd. I believe this movie to be a more sophisticated thriller, but the music was classic and cliché “scary movie music.” The foreboding tune was consistent, and perhaps this was just my theater, but LOUD. It almost seemed like the makers might be mocking this type of music because of how prevalent it was.

Overall, I’d recommend it. It makes you think and certainly keeps you interested. Plus Leo’s accent is fun to listen to.

Dear John and Valentine's Day: Battle of the Romantics








Honestly, I could not muster up enough words about either of these films individually, so I’m going to combine them into one review that will reveal which mushy movie you should see. Annnndddddd go!

First off, if you’re looking for a plot, you have to go with Dear John, simple as that. It has a certain unexpected substance to it along with the very expected love story. Depending on how deeply you get into movies when you watch them, Dear John can have you leave the theater thinking about it. Stuff happens in Valentine’s Day, but I think it pretty much says it all that Julia Roberts’ “story” in the movie involved her being on screen for a total of six minutes. This in no way diminishes her performance, I’m just saying, this is no Love Actually. Secondly, if you’re looking for “feel-good” you should go with Valentine’s Day. If you happen to see both, you’ll understand why. Plus it wins the award for comedy, but that wouldn’t be hard to guess. (Taylor Swift is an especially nice touch for fans).

Eye-candy wise for girls, I’d have to go with Dear John. Nowadays I actually don’t think you can get a better shirtless man to stare at than Channing Tatum. Valentine’s Day has the quantity, but not necessarily the quality in this area. It does feature the up-and-coming hottie Taylor Launter though, which was a little bonus for the teenage crowd. Partly because I don’t entirely know how to classify hot girls, but mostly because I don’t think a ridiculous number of guys are rushing to the theater to see these movies, I won’t go into depth about which flick has better looking girls in it.

I’m sorry if these comparisons seem a little superficial, but there’s not a ton going on under the surface in Valentines Day and Dear John is really meant for the romantic crowd. In the end it depends on what you’re in the mood. For, if that’s a fairly well thought out, if not cliché romance, hit up Dear John. If you want to just let your mind melt for a little while while watching most of Hollywood flash before you eyes, go with Valentine’s Day. Best of luck with you gut-wrenching decision.

Edge of Darkness


This movie is like Taken, but without the happy ending. And without Liam Neeson, who is probably better liked by most of the population. Surprisingly, or not, I am not giving anything away by saying that. You can surmise most of the plot from any of the trailers. Actually, the only way the trailers may be deceiving is by making the movie appear to have more of a plot than it really does. You have hope when the movie begins, after the imminent death that you wait for for the first ten minutes, that you might get to watch Mel Gibson become a hero. Don’t hold you breath. Seriously, you will die.

The movie is a movie about revenge, nothing more. In many ways it also reminded me of Law Abiding Citizen a man with nothing left to lose taking everything from others. But, while Gerard Butler attempted to take down the justice system, albeit because he was probably mentally deranged with rage, we see Gibson ruining the lives of everyone he encounters to accomplish very little, while also appearing nuts. Law Abiding Citizen also seemed to have some cleverness to it, like a mystery you were trying to solve, with characters that were intelligent and intriguing. While there were certainly things you didn’t know about in this movie, there were also a lot of gaps of logic in the characters’ actions, and so when they succeeded it seemed hard to credit the win to them.

Lots of people die. Like a lot. And the story you get to explain the deaths and the violence doesn’t quite seem like enough to justify even all those movie deaths. Gibson didn’t do a poor job; I just wasn’t sure why I was watching him. Possibly the most likeable character was the mysterious Englishman who’s role in everything was sporadic and confusing. The constant flashbacks to happy time’s Gibson had with the daughter are sad, but seem out of place in a movie where someone dies every other scene. So if you just kind of like watching people die, with some unexplained action thrown in there, go for it.

I don't feel like writing a song about this. Deal. Or just repeat the words death and kill over and over in alternating loud and hushed tones to some scary movie music.

The Book of Eli


I went into this movie just hoping that that Mila Kunis didn’t make it unbearable. She did not. Hooray. And including that wondrous success, the movie was surprisingly good. From the commercials I had seen and the R rating, it looked as if the movie would consist of Denzel Washington brutally murdering people, but doing it for some gosh-darn good reason that made him a hero. Although, the film does include some of this, it’s not nearly as gory as one would expect from the advertisements. The post-apocalyptic setting also allows the audience to give Denzel a pass if he is occasionally violent, as his life is full of near-death experiences – usually involving other people trying to kill him when he’s already starving to death. Denzel’s character is set-up as the classic man on a mission. There is no doubt he is portrayed as the good guy – doing anything from sharing his meager food rations with a rat to sparing prostitutes their “duty.” The conflict between a seemingly peaceful man and one who can kill you in less than five seconds is an intriguing one – one you may not understand until the end of the movie.

The barren world after the end of the world is a very interesting creation. We never find out exactly what brought the world from what it is now to the desolate desert it is in the movie - which I like. It lets you imagine all the ways humans can completely screw up everything. The scarce resources, especially the value of items that now are considered worthless, and empty landscapes and towns draw you in and make the circumstances believable. Once you accept that the place you are seeing is barely related to the one you currently live in, it’s easier to allow certain less than likely things to happen. The desperation of the “bad guy” played by Gary Oldman is seen in some form or another in everyone’s eyes; he’s just the only one with the power to pursue his somewhat insane goal. Violence seems to be the main pastime in this society, as people have nothing else to believe in except fulfilling their desires. Whether this is a more honest reality or one lacking because there is no morality, is one of the themes the movie explores. Overall it’s pretty badass while still raising a couple somewhat interesting questions about civilization – at least that’s what I’m going to say in order to back my enjoyment of the film.

The Young Victoria


Unexpected but enjoyable, the words I would use to describe The Young Victoria. I assumed it would be a somewhat dry historical film, really just made to give Emily Blunt a chance to take on a serious role. I discovered, however, that it is a charming romance with a very enjoyable cast. The movie is set in a somewhat tumultuous political time, and Blunt certainly does not take the role lightly, but the politics seem to take a back seat to the love story. This was not a bad choice, just one I was not expecting (probably one I would have expected though, if I'd bothered to read the tag-lines on the posters). The romance seems genuine, a bit of an oddity in a time of arranged marriages, giving it more of the fun of a fantasy to watch. Blunt does a wonderful job of showing the importance of her character’s perseverance and strength in a time when women were not known for either. The movie, as can be inferred from the title, is more about Victoria’s struggles rather than her kingdom’s. Her family matters, friendships, and courters, although all involved in the political scandal of the day, tell Victoria’s story instead of England’s. I was delighted to see that Paul Bettany is in this movie. Although, I do have to admit some bias here, as his character in A Knight’s Tale is one of my favorite of all time, and I have rather enjoyed most of his work since then. Overall, don’t take any males you know, but for a girls night, it will be quite suitable.

What’s this? A TV show? Insanity! Yet so intriguing…


Cold-hearted? Selfish? Brutally honest? Druggy? Yes, indeed, all of these words describe America’s new sweetheart, Mr. Gregory House. I too must admit to an addiction. I’ve spent many a day watching episode after episode in their delightful non-order. It’s possible that this is one of the show’s charms; you usually don’t really need to know what’s happening in the plot to watch. Occasionally, this is untrue as I am still unsure when Chase, Cameron, and Foreman were switched out for Thirteen, Taub, and Kutner and then switched back in, sort of. But, really, where does the addiction stem from? What is so appealing about watching a genius/jerk act like a genius/jerk? There are no surprises in that. Almost no one actually understands what the doctors are talking about, except when things go right or wrong, so that can’t be the answer. If people are finding themselves relating to House, that is both far too complimentary and extremely self-degrading. Do we enjoy watching the solving of a puzzle, possible, but as the show almost always has a happy cure ending that also seems unlikely. Do we watch for that rare episode where things do go terribly wrong and House falls apart? Maybe. But then we’re cruel little demons who like to watch failure and emotional haddicapedness. Perhaps we’re all just waiting for Hugh Laurie to screw up and talk in his British accent. Most likely of all, however, I think people like to watch the show because House can figure people out. Most of us spend our lives trying to understand those around us; House can know everything about a person in mere seconds. Although, his assumptions and fear of actually creating lasting relationships isn’t necessarily something to aspire to, people yearn to know how everyone works. Or maybe that’s completely wrong and you are a medical genius who finds these rare cases fascinating or you hate when people analyze other people. If so, you are either very boring or possibly very intriguing. Yes, that second part almost sounded like a compliment, but really I just can’t comprehend someone not wanting to know more about how the people around them act, so don’t go puffing your feathers up. P.S. Although this writer is a big fan of the show, she does not condone drug use, partly, because that woman who showed up when House was hallucinating was sooooooo annoying.

My sister, who will be known as C Dagger, suggested that I write a short and entertaining song about each movie I see. She claims that it will be original and hilarious and I will instantly shoot to stardom, so blame her if you no likey. Youth in Revolt


Francois Dillinger is cool. He is the cat’s pajamas, the bee’s knees, and the otter’s sunglasses (the last one is something only Francois can be as it is too cool for the rest of the world). I know, I know, the point of the movie is that Michael Cera, or Nick as his character is called, finds true happiness in being himself instead of Francois, but who are we kidding, Francois is awesome. I rejoiced every time he came on screen and did something ridiculous and wonderful. I fear they ended with the wrong message in the charming film Youth in Revolt (yes, just remembered I should mention the title). I think perhaps Nick should have finally started taking chances and living his life, instead of hunching back over and returning to his squermy self. Oh well, enough hypothetical rubbish, onto what actually happened in the movie.

It was rather delightful. The characters were charming and likable. The plot was entertaining. Ke$ha was in it! Fun was had by all. I did find Sheenie, Nick’s love interest, mostly annoying, but it suited the role. Her sweater-wearing boyfriend and drug-using brother were fun add-ins. The ending didn’t much suit me, but I still left the theater happy. This all may seem a little vague, but that is because I’ve realized that talking too much about any part of this movie is bound to give something away, so just go see it.

NINE

NINE. The title of a new movie and the number of minutes into it when I realized I wanted to leave the theater. Not just clever line, completely honest. Sadly, this was a movie that had cost money, and so I felt I should stay and see it through. Unlucky me. Questions that went through my head as I left:

How did they get all those famous people to be in it?

Why were so many unnecessary characters in it?

Did it have a plot? No.

That last one was pretty easy to answer. There was no plot. There also were way to many people assuming that they were the lead. Why were they all there? What was their purpose? Oops, accidentally slipped into the question thing again. The one hope I’d had for the movie was then the music. I had quite liked Fergie’s “Be Italian” in the commercial and thought the film could have a few decent musical numbers. It did not. It had multiple almost not-bearable musical numbers. It’s not that the singing itself was bad, it wasn’t. It’s more that you wondered why on earth the people who were singing were singing or why they were in the movie at all. The ray of hope for the movie was Marion Cotillard, who the intolerable lead male was cheating on, which only increased my hatred of the movie. Penelope Cruz also put in a nice performance, but I can’t say I liked her burlesque style number. Judi Dench was charming as usual, but unnecessary. Kate Hudson’s character was boring, but her musical number was fun to watch for the first minute. Nicole Kidman was gorgeous, but who could even keep track of the fact that she was in the movie. I felt a wave of despair when each new scene started and I realized the film was not yet over. Once all the females had sung a song I sighed with relief that it must soon end, but then one of them sang again! Intolerable! Perhaps if a movie had been made with just Cotillard and Cruz, included a plot, had more singing from Fergie… nope, no hope. Just don’t see it. The stars will survive.

Crazy Heart

Latest viewing, Crazy Heart. I would say that I’m biased because I myself am a songwriter, (indeed commence the mocking of my cliché NYU self, but I was a songwriter before I started attending NYU so a small ha to you) but as I am completely clueless when it comes to country music, I think they cancel out. So, assuming I’m unbiased, the music in this movie is still incredible, as is the fact that Jeff Bridges and Colin Farrell do all their own singing. What? Colin Farrell you say? Yes, he is in fact in this movie. It wasn’t highly publicized, with only a quick shot of him in the trailer, but his role is brilliantly done. I believe that the way the story is not meant to be about his character is also the same reason why they decided to make the advertising not about his famous self. But back to the fantastic music, did I mention that I loved it? The Weary Kind is a perfect song. No further comment.

Jeff Bridges also does an excellent job creating a character that you are aware is mostly a scumball, but that you still can recognize the humanity in. You’re watching a fallen hero try and find out what life is like without the cape. Yes, this movie is just a smidgen heartbreakingly depressing, just a warning. Maggie Gyllenhall is charming, but I’m not entirely sure I believe the initial attraction she has to Bridges’ character. He’s old, drunk, and a chain-smoker – va va voom? The relationship is interesting to watch though, as you’re not really sure if you want it to work out in the end. The boy who plays her son is adorable, pretty much awesome, and no doubt, a star on the rise, plus he’s adorable.

I was lucky enough to have the director of the film at my screening, who, aside from being very young and green, is apparently very talented. Some may say that this particularly gifted cast didn’t really need directing, but he was charming, so I’m giving him credit. Among other things, he called Robert Duvall “Bobby” and didn’t punch that audience member who decided to tell him what his movie is about (I would not have had the restraint). When I searched for Scott Cooper’s previous films, I found a very confusing list including an Austin Powers movie. This is because Crazy Heart is the first film he has directed, but he has been acting for some time. There is already a lot of Oscar buzz for this movie and this director, and I gotta say, that’s just cool. Seriously, who wins an Oscar for the first film they ever directed? Ya, ya, I’m sure some of you will go look up who actually did, but I still think it’s cool.

Overall, you should see it, especially if you’re a music lover. If you’re not a music lover, you should not only not see it, you should go check to make sure your soul is intact. Or just go see it, whatever.

I fear that there is no non-cliché way to write an introduction to a blog. No matter how I put it, you are bound to find it either conceited or idiotic, or both if you’re a real jerk. So let’s go with… this is where I’ll be writing stuff. Probably stuff that is about the place I live, New York City, where I got to school, NYU, and what I do, that one you’ll just have to wait for you greedy little munchkin. If you think New York City is all hype and noise, or you believe NYU to be full of self-praising, unoriginal hippies, or that I really, in fact, do nothing with my time, I may occasionally agree with you, so stick around Señor pompous pants.

Now that that's done, let’s move on to talking about something I find interesting and something you’ll read in order to see what other delightful names I’ll call you. Movies, they’re my thing. A medium portion of this blog will be devoted to my mindless drawl about them. Excited? Dang right you are! I’ve recently discovered a way to see free screenings of movies, which essentially means that my happiness has grown from three sizes too small to sporadically joyous. It combines my love of free with my love of film equaling some f-filled fun nights.
